88.03 Mahogany sideboard and gilt framed mirror

English

English, early 19th Century, Sideboard  119 cm high by 103 cm. wide by 40 cm. deep.  Mirror  112 cm. wide by 70 cm. high.

This well-made sideboard was bought from Clarke Antiques, 62, West Street, Warwick in 1988 when we were furnishing Castle Hill House in Warwick where we had moved in 1987. Bob Clarke gave us the then-dilapidated mirror (an item which I suspect he would have difficulty otherwise selling) to sweeten the deal. The top and the doors of the sideboard show the distinctive flame pattern so admired by the Victorians. The sideboard holds the casket which contains Jane’s ashes; its location fulfills her wishes that her remains should end up as near to the Sun as possible.
