18.03 Christina

English

Catalogue number 18.03

A portrait, acrylics on wood, painted by Menorcan artist Pol Marban in 2018, signed, but unframed.  Height 88 cm. by 113 cm. wide.

When the painting of the Foundation’s building in Calle Isabel II (see 18.02) was commissioned in 2018, Pol had just completed this striking portrait of Christina Iamile.  I had no difficulty in persuading the ever-generous Pol that he should make me a ‘buy one, get one free’ offer, and thus this special picture came into the Collection.  It is painted on the base of a warehouse storage pallet, as are a number of his works (In my experience, painters are always short of canvasses or other surfaces on which to ply their craft!).  There is a long history of artists including a picture within their picture (think of Van Gogh), and here Pol continues that tradition.

Painted in Mahon with acrylics on canvas by Menorcan artist Jordi Cardenas in 2019. Unframed. 92 cm. high by 74 cm. wide.

Jordi Josep Cárdenas Lozano was awarded the Foundation’s bursary in October 2018, and he used it in the spring of 2019 to travel to California to attend a workshop run by the renowned American muralist Morgan Bricca (see www.morgansmurals.com). This painting replicates in miniature the large mural which he made and gifted to the Foundation on his return, on the west facing wall of the top terrace of the Foundation.  Jordi wrote to me about the picture ‘I think that it is a very complete image because it has still life, human figures, architecture and some lettering. I love the composition and the light. And I also like the subject: the produce of Menorca. Maybe you already know it, but nowadays in Menorca, we are fighting against the big supermarket companies to defend the small shops on the island.’

07.10 The matter of memory

English

Catalogue number 07.10

Five mixed media sculptures by Louise Caul (born in 1964) created in 2005, using mostly naturally occurring materials.

We bought these sculptures from the artist Louise Caul, who was a mature student at Derby University, obtaining an MA in Fine Arts in 2005. These works comprised her degree show on the theme of ‘that which is no longer there’ when she graduated in 2005, and were subsequently exhibited at the Dome in Buxton in 2006. The materials which she used to create these ‘dresses’ are:-  varnished scripts, human hair, dried flowers, candle wax, and dried banana skins. She wrote at the time:-  ‘Most of my recent work concerns different aspects of memory; I am primarily interested in its impact on individual’s psychological and emotional states of being. These notions are explored through materials and processes using transformation and repetition, the materials are chosen for their metaphoric and symbolic associations’. She died in 2012.

Catalogue number 05.21

Oils on canvas, attributed by auctioneers Bonhams to the twentieth century, British School, framed with an indecipherable lettering in the top-left corner, 122 cm. high by 92 cm. wide.

This figurative canvas, in a very distressed condition, was bought as an unsold item from the Bonham’s Knightsbridge saleroom in August 2005. The lettering in the top left-hand corner of the painting is possibly in cyrillic script, which adds to the mystery of the work’s provenance.  The picture is currently being conserved in Barcelona by Viviana and Nadir Lopez Novell (the two Spanish conservationists who did such a remarkable job om the walls of the Salon).

He studied at University College in London, and made several further visits to England. On one of these in 1912, Sir William Rothenstein, (see 01.06) who was a friend of Rabindinath, arranged accommodation for him nearby to where he lived in Hampstead, and drew this as one of a series of at least six sketches, one other of which is in the Tate gallery, and yet another in the City of Manchester Art Gallery. Catalogue number 01.20

English, adjustable  firescreen from the nineteenth century with a wooden frame of mahogany veneer and a fabric covering. Height 91 cm. increasing to 150 cm. width 60 cm. depth 43 cm.

Firescreens were a common household item in eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain; domestic heating being provided very largely by open fires in the main rooms.  This type of ‘cheval’ (i.e. four-legged) screen, with the screen lowered, was used to provide a decorative cover for the functional fireplace, and improve its appearance when no fire was lit.  When the fire was lit, the screen could be raised and positioned to protect against the heat, and more importantly perhaps, to prevent reddening of the faces of the ladies, to whom at that time the fairness and delicacy of their skin was of paramount importance. The fabric of the screen is not original. It probably would have had a needleworked covering, sewn by the one of the ladies of the house, or would have had a ‘decoupage’ cover (see 83.02) made by the family.

This was bought from Warwick Antiques in 2001, and lived in front of our rather grand fireplace in Castle Hill House.

After the war, he studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts and in 1926 he married a fellow, and significant, South Australian artist Doreen Rowley. They went together to England and studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before returning to South Australia, where Goodchild set up a studio in Adelaide. He worked there for the rest of his life as an etcher, a landscape artist, a painter and watercolourist. He was commissioned by the Australian Government as an official war artist in the second world war. He is described as ‘having an eye like a hawk and a fist as steady as a rock’ - characteristics perhaps portrayed in this picture, which we bought in the Camden Passage street market in London in 2001.

00.02 Pope Paul IV

Catalogue number 00.02

A portrait, oils on canvas, by an unknown artist dating from the nineteenth century, framed, 73 cm. high by 58 cm. wide.

Portraits of the Pope painted by leading artists of the day were a regular occurrence in the Renaissance period. The best known examples are Titian’s Pope Paul III, El Greco’s Pope Pius V, Caravaggio’s Pope Paul V, Raphael’s Pope Julius II and Velasquez’s Pope Innocent X. This is a nineteenth century painting in the manner, I like to think, of Tiziano Vecelli (Titian) with the subject dressed in the red robe and cap, as in all the above paintings. We bought this picture at Christies Saleroom in South Kensington in the year 2000, where it was listed as being of Pope Paul IV.
